HAL 2014-2015
Six 8th grade HAL students spent a month planning for the e-Missions: CyberSurgeon event that was hosted by ESU #3 and facilitated over webcam by the Challenger Learning Center based out of Washington, D.C. They learned medical terms, how to fill out a patient medical chart, and how to work together as a team mixed with HAL students from Gretna Middle School. Their goal was to treat patients and get them the help they needed as their "medical ship" traveled up the Amazon River. Each students was assigned one of four roles. The Case Manager's job was to accept patients into the clinic, communicate with the other specialists on their team, and report to the Chief Medical Officer over the webcam on their patients' statuses. The Diagnosis Specialist viewed each patients symptoms, made an initial diagnosis, and ordered tests. The Med-Surg Specialist reviewed the test results and approved the diagnosis or ordered further testing. Finally each patient was given to the Clinical Intervention Specialist where they were given a treatment plan and put into a clinical trail if they qualified for it. The students worked their shift in the "clinic" for two hours, and when it came to a close, they didn't want to stop! This was such a great experience for all involved! (The first Youtube video was made possible by Lauryn Kalkowski, Mr. Brewer, and Mr. Moore. Thanks!)
Last year students attended a poetry performance event. The videos have finally been uploaded. Click on the students' name to see them.

6th, 7th, and 8th graders that were interested in how to write music participated in a Music Theory event lead by singer/songwriter Andy Hackbarth. They learned how to put together a song and practiced this in the morning session. In the afternoon, they wrote their own songs and were given the opportunity to perform them.
6th and 7th grade HAL attended Celebrate Creativity at the Joslyn Art Museum. They each attended a workshop and took a tour of a specific area of the museum. We then ended the day with a performance by the Omaha Symphony.
5th-11th graders attended the Tech-academy at the Peter Kiewit Institute and learned about jobs in the field of informational technology.
The 6th grade attended a leadership challenge day at ESU3.

6th, 7th, and 8th grade HAL students participated in a VEX robotics session at ESU3. They worked together to build their robot, add specialty features, and race it in a competition.
